Dr. Susan Pinker

Psychologist, Author, Social Science Columnist

Dr. Pinker is a developmental psychologist who writes about social science. She was educated at McGill University and the University of Waterloo, after which she spent 25 years in clinical practice and teaching psychology, first at Dawson College, then at McGill University. Her newspaper columns, Problem Solving and The Business Brain, appeared weekly in The Globe and Mail from 2002-2012. 

She currently writes a column on human behaviour, Mind and Matter, for The Wall Street Journal. Susan Pinker’s first book,  The Sexual Paradox: Men, Women and the Real Gender Gap, about the roots of sex differences in the classroom and the workplace, was a New York Times’ Editors’ Choice and was awarded The William James Book Award by the American Psychological Association. It has been published in 17 countries. Her writing has also been recognized in awards from the Canadian Medical Association (2000), the Professional Writers’ Association of Canada (2002, 2010), The International Society for Intelligence Research (2014), and she has been nominated for the John Alexander Media Award (2000), the Aventis Pasteur Medal for Excellence in Health Research Journalism (1999), the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award (2007), and the BC National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction (2009).

Susan’s ideas have been featured in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Times of London, The Guardian, The Globe and Mail, The Economist, The Financial Times, The Today Show, Oprah Magazine, and Der Spiegel, among other publications. Her latest book, The Village Effect, was a Canadian bestseller and an Apple non-fiction “best pick” for 2014. The English paperback editions were published by Penguin Random House and Atlantic Books in 2015, as were the Korean, Chinese, Turkish and Polish translations.
