Sharon Stone Hosts an Enlightening Panel for Women’s Brain Health
by Julia Russo for Vogue:
In the heart of Beverly Hills, an exclusive group of Los Angeles’s most powerful women gathered at the Gagosian Gallery last night to support the Women’s Brain Health Initiative. The evening began on the gallery’s rooftop patio with twinkling lights and unparalleled views of the Hollywood hills rolling in the distance. Guests nibbled on tasty hors d’oeuvres and sipped on cocktails and Champagne before heading downstairs to the panel.
The cocktail reception was followed by an intimate discussion moderated by the Oscar-nominated actress Sharon Stone, to raise awareness and mobilize support for the Women’s Brain Health Initiative. The organization works to escalate concern over the unchecked growth of brain-aging diseases in women. Melanie Griffith, Paula Wagner, Tamara Mellon, and Crystal Lourd spearheaded the talk in a remarkable setting surrounded by the gallery’s latest art installations and sculptures.
The panelists revealed powerful, personal testimonies of their individual struggles. Listeners broke into applause and laughter as the women shared moving stories and lessons learned while making their way up the ladder. The panel’s brain health expert, Dr. Pauline Maki, offered alarming statistics concerning women and brain health. Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression, stroke, and dementia, and an astounding 70 percent of Alzheimer’s patients are female. Despite these obstacles, when asked the question, “Can women have it all?” Mellon responded, “Men would never be asked that question, so why ask it at all?” The entire gallery went silent in awe of Mellon’s poignant statement and an overall inspiring evening.
